Raising Cane's - Denham Springs LA

Chicken fingers only, at Raising Cane's

Today we're taking a look at Raising Cane's. It is a highly specialized fast food concept, so if you don't like chicken fingers, you're out of luck: it's all they serve.

They certainly make an effort to excel in the one entree they offer: Raising Cane's uses only fresh chicken tenderloins (that's right, never frozen) marinated for 24 hours. As they say on their website they "only have one love, great tasting chicken fingers" and "consistently serve an exceptionally high quality product with fast food speed and convenience."

Named after the yellow Labrador retriever of the founder, Raising Cane's opened their first restaurant in 1996 outside Louisiana State University. They now have about 45 locations primarily in Louisiana, but also in Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Colorado, Georgia, Mississippi, Nevada, Nebraska, Ohio and Virginia.

Raising Cane's keeps their menu simple with a few variously sized 'boxes' on the menu that always include chicken fingers, crinkle-cut fries, a drink, and their Cane's Sauce; and might also include coleslaw, Texas toast, or a Kaiser roll to make a sandwich.

Joe's Crab Shack - San Antonio

We had lunch on the Riverwalk. RMC had shrimp and I had Fish and Chips. The best part was the cold drinks after walking in the sweltering heat.

Republic of Texas - Riverwalk in San Antonio

Link to their website.

We ate on the waterfront. Burgers and nachos. The food was ordinary, the location was not.

Double D Restaurant - Comfort Texas

Located in downtown Comfort. The outside is not very welcoming. Notice the two motorcycles, a married couple from Denver Colorado.

Inside decor was somewhat rustic.

The breakfast was delicious. Cream gravy was served on the side.

Alto de Jalisco - Fredericksburg Texas

Small Taqueria on Main Street in Fredericksburg. Good food and service

Hill Country Cupboard - Johnson City Texas

Looks like one of the old southern eateries.

Nearly 3 dozen sold. Hmmmm.

We were there a little late for breakfast

Grits and eggs were better than expected. Biscuits
had been cooked earlier and microwaved. Ham
had sugar in it. Better overall than expected.

Rosa's Cafe and Totilla Factory

Defying the looks of the building it really is a Taco Bell like establishment. They do have a tortilla machine so the tortillas are made fresh. Definitely not a Juan Pablos but close to the Hampton Inn.

Riscky's BBQ - Fort Worth

We had the sliced brisket sandwich and slaw (RMC) and red beans (LMC). The sauce was so good that we bought a bottle to take home. Very good. This was at the Stockyard Station location.

The cheeseburgers and onion rings were good. RMC enjoyed her Blue Bell coke float.

Dixie Cafe - Hot Springs

We had dinner at the cafe. Nice building and apparently a chain in this part of the country. RMC's Shepard pie was steak tartar in disguise. My chicken and dumplins looked like they came out of a can. Fried okra and fried corn on the cob was good.

When it comes to dinner, nothing tastes better than a home-cooked meal. And no restaurant knows home-cooking better than The Dixie Cafe.

Doe's Eat Place Little Rock

Kind of a weird menu and very expensive. Steaks were ordered by the pound. The 2 pound TBone was the smallest. Very good though including the new potatoes.

The Story of Doe's

What has become a Little Rock landmark of national renown -- Doe's Eat Place -- has its orgins in the unlikeliest of models, a no-frills diner deep in the delta. But then nothing about Doe's is quite what one would expect from a world-class steakhouse -- except fabulous steaks, that is.

East Arkansas restauranteur and hobby pilot George Eldridge had been flying friends and clients over to Doe's Eat Place in Greenville, Mississipi for steak and tamales for years, a joint in a rundown neighborhood with cheap panelled walls that had acquired a reputation for its steaks. Eventually Eldridge decided to bring the mountain to Mohammed, and contracted the right to bring both the name and menu to Little Rock. In the spirit of not fixing what ain't broke, Eldridge maintained the no-frills tradition, and opened Doe's Eat Place on the decidely downscale corner of Ringo & West Markham Streets in 1988.

Since then, other Doe's offshoots have sprung up independently in the region, but perhaps none quite as true to the original Greenville spirit, and certainly none achieving the celebrity status that the Little Rock Doe's Eat Place has come to enjoy. Naturally, we at Doe's like to attribute this solely to our good "eats", but it hasn't hurt to count President Bill Clinton among our most loyal customers!

A longtime regional favorite, Doe's rose to national prominence during the 1992 presidential election campaign, when Clinton staffers made it their hangout. When then-candidate Clinton was interviewed by Rolling Stone magazine for the September cover story, Doe's was the setting. Chef Lucille Robinson was escorted by Eldridge to the Inaugural Ball -- an Annie Lebowitz portrait of the pair is among the dozens of photographic memorabilia on the restaurant walls.

Throughout the vagaries of political fame & fortune, however, Doe's has maintained its down-to-earth atmosphere. New photographs and clippings may continue their spread across the walls, but the real stars will always be our "eats."
